Body parts that were discovered along the shore could possibly be linked to Avonte Oquendo, the missing boy with autism whose disappearance in October prompted a city-wide search and garnered the support of the public, beyond New York City.

a torso, left arm, legs and a sneaker were found by a teenage girl on Thursday night on a rock in the water near College Point Yacht Club at Hermon A. MacNeil Park in College Hill, Queens around 7 p.m. on Thursday. Police responded to a 911 call in the vicinity of Powell Cove Boulevard and Endeavor Place after a 14-year-old girl stumbled across the limbs. The girl took a photo and showed it to her mother back home, who then called police.

The police also recovered clothing, including jeans and sneakers (size 5 1/2 Nike Air Jordans) that were said to have matched what the missing teenager was wearing on October 4 when he wandered away from the Riverview School in Long Island City. The Oquendo family lawyer, David Perecman also confirmed that the clothing that was found matched what Avonte was wearing the day he went missing.

According to The Daily Mail, the uncovered body parts have been taken to the Queens County Morgue to be positively identified and a cause of death determined. This process could take several days, so while the authorities wait for the identity of the remains, they will continue to search the harbor. Hermon A. MacNeil Park is about nine miles from where Avonte last seen.

Reports claim that Avonte’s mother, who has hoped that her son was being held by a kidnapper, has been notified and will be taken to the medical examiner’s office later today to examine clothing found on the body parts. I couldn’t imagine having to go and identify pieces of a decaying body that could possibly belong to my son.

Avonte’s mom told Perecman she will not be convinced until she has proof her son is dead. “It’s not Avonte until it’s Avonte,” she said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Oquendo family during this horrible time.
