Longtime fans remember Reagan Gomez from The WB’s 1995-’99 show “The Parent ‘Hood,” but since the days of playing “Zaria Peterson,” the actress and mother of two has added producer and writer to her growing resume. In between juggling voice over work on Fox’s “The Cleveland Show,” a new role on TV One’s “Love That Girl” and a 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son at home, Gomez created and stared in the first season of her first web series, “Almost Home.” And now she’s ready for round two.
The actress-turned-producer is currently crownfunding for a second season of her web show, with hopes of releasing new episodes early next year. “Almost Home” stars Gomez and her real life brother-in-law DeJuan Turrentine, as a brother and sister duo on the move to Southern California in search of a fresh start after the death of their mother. As the characters navigate a new life, they find themselves following singing and styling opportunities and discovering their dreams, but the Hollywood shuffle’s not without it’s share of drama.
“The triumph of season one was launching a successful IndieGoGo campaign and being able to complete the season,” Gomez told HelloBeautiful.com. “I funded the first few episodes myself — including the trailer — and we didn’t know where we were going to get the money for the rest of the season, then we heard about IndieGoGo.” In just under three months, the actress raised $13, 841 for production costs for her show via the crowd funding website. “We didn’t reach our goal, but I’m a mama, I’m a Black mama so I know how to stretch a dollar!” Gomez said. In addition to wearing multiple hats for the production, which she calls a family-affair, she tapped her husband, DeWayne Turrentine, to act in the series and handle all the music. “We were able to complete the season and this became the first project that I wrote, produced and was really involved in every stage–from pre-production, to post-producting and editing. It was a turning point you can say.”
COMING UP, ON SEASON 2…
Gomez has already written season 2 of her web series and she promises lots of drama and thought provoking scenes to come. She tells us the main character, Lisa, and her industry beau Scott will have their budding relationship tested after “Lisa finally gets to see what it’s like to be dating one of the most popular producers in the world”…as other chicks look on. There’s a possible love interest for DaJuan (although it’s “not all that it seems”) and there will be a few other new characters in the mix. Through the character Queen, a hip hop artist played by Gomez’s real-life sister-in-law, Gomez will also use the second season to “talk about things that female emcees have to deal with in the male dominated, mysogynist, sexist-hip hop business that we all love anyway” (if you follow her well-informed conversations on Twitter, @ReaganGomez, are you surprised?).
And the multitasking actress has her eyes set on even more projects in the future. “The web series was one step, the next step will be season two, and then the next step will be a feature-length project,” she says, adding that she plans to turn “This Time,” a short she shot with “Almost Home” director Matthew A. Cherry, into a full length feature film. “I’ve been bit by the bug and now I can’t stop!”
