Rihanna’s doobie stole the show at last night’s American Music Awards! She took home the first-ever Icon award rocking a bobby pin-laid wrap that got more attention than her actual achievement.
Of course, the new ‘do became a trending topic. There seemed to be an equal amount of admirers and haters, but no one disliked the jeweled doobie more than Trumaine Ferguson, the former manger of Bronx rapper known as Patwa.
Ferguson expressed outrage in an online letter, claiming RiRi stole her artist’s signature style.
“I am writing to express my extreme frustration and anger over the blatant theft of a image that my former artist and I cultivated,” she wrote. “A few years ago I worked with an up and coming female rapper named Patwa. She’s a Bronx born 2nd generation Jamerican who fused hip hop, reggae and culture into her music. During 2010 we began generating a buzz in the underground hip hop community. This lead to a couple of meeting with some big wigs at def jam, Geffen, Atlantic and yes Roc nation who manages Rihanna.”
She went on the say that all the music executives asked Patwa to change her hairstyle.
“While meeting with A&Rs with these labels we were continuously told that the imagery we were trying to brand was not “lady like” was “to street”, “to hood” and “to ghetto” we were told that “white America would never get behind such ignorance”. Ratchetness had yet to become an accepted house hold term. The image we were trying to run with was what Patwa knew from the streets which was the doobie wrap. She wore it proudly with jeweled pins to signify she was a Queen and this was her ghetto crown.”
Ferguson added that she felt “violated” and “hurt” when she saw Rihanna wearing the look on the AMAs.
“Fast forward to 11/24/13 and who do I see grace my flat screen while sitting in my modest one bedroom apartment wearing a doobie wrap with jeweled pins at the AMA’s. Roc nations own Ri Ri. I honestly felt violated,” she continued. “You see during 2011 Patwa and I crossed paths with Rihanna at a Roc Nation event. Rihanna who on that evening was wearing a hairstyle that she ‘borrowed’ from Cassie, complimented the jeweled pin wrap said it looked nice and even inquired as to who did it? We of course were flattered out of our socks and felt almost validated. Two years later it appears middle America is ready and Rihanna really liked what she saw. By no means did we invent the doobie wrap or name. However prior to the AMA’s no one had attempted to wear the doobie as a hairstyle in public. No one!!!!!! I just find it very insulting that something we brought to those people was to “ghetto”. But now Rihanna can accept awards while proudly displaying it. I am really hurt by this and wanted to scream. But I wrote to you guys. Wanted to let someone else know that she stole that look from Patwa.”

Ask RiRi if she has and f**ks to give…

1. Top AMA Moments
The 2013 American Music Awards came and went, but not without a few notable moments that stuck out in our heads, like: Rihanna's doobie and Macklemore's shout out to Trayvon Martin. Keep clicking for the best and most memorable moments...
2. Rihanna Wore A Doobie
Oh Rihanna. She walked straight out of the Domincan salon and onto the AMA stage. We're so conflicted about Ri Ri's decision to leave in her bobby pins and rock a doobie wrap to the AMAs. While one side of us loathes the island gal for being so basic the other side of us adores how she brings real life trends to the limelight. Either way she's so freaking gorg! She had that oil sheen on lock!
3. Miley Cyrus' Backtrack Flub
If you were expecting Miley Cyrus to do something crazy like twerk with her tongue out, you're so disappointed. She did perform with a giant cat, however. Miley let her talent speak for itself (if you don't count her ensemble as a gimmick) and actually sing, and that she did. Miley sang her little heart out and when the backtrack began to skip, she recovered but we're sure they'll be lip-syncing rumors to follow.
4. Jennifer Lopez Killed The Salsa
In one of the greatest tributes to Cecila Cruz we've ever seen, Jennifer Lopez literally stomped on the competition with her saucy salsa performance! J. Lo left her "Fly Girl" soul on the stage, but we can't forget her backup dancing boyfriend who impressed us with his epic body roll. Watch the performance here: http://bit.ly/IczZZR
5. Rihanna Shares The Stage With Her Mother
If you aren't familiar with Rihanna's mother Monica, you got to witness her fabulousness first hand at the AMAs when she presented Rihanna with the first ever Icon award and gushed about her daughter in a moment that showed Black women in an amazing light. We live for the way Rihanna's mother's presence turned her into a wide-eyed little girl.
6. Macklemore References Trayvon Martin In Acceptance Speech
The Trayvon Martin case weighed heavy on most people's heart and artist Macklemore was one of them. During his acceptance speech, he referenced Trayvon in an attempt to keep the conversation about racial profiling going, saying: "This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it's time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it."
7. R.Kelly & Lady Gaga's Novella
This is what happens when you put two musical geniuses together, Lady Gaga and R. Kelly put on a theatrical performance of their song "Do What You Want" and we loved every minute of the interracial JFK, Marilyn Monroe affair. And can we talk about Lady Gaga's voice? She was singing for her life, yes she was!
8. Ariana Grande's Performance & 10 Second Speech
It's official, we love Ariana Grande. After stealing the show with a nostalgic Mariah Carey-like performance (the girl's got some pipes on her) she charmed us when she accepted the Kohl's New Artist of the Year award and delivered her "Thank You's" in under 10 seconds. Watch the performance here: http://bit.ly/IczZZR
9. Ciara Shuts Down Baby Bump Rumors
Ciara left little to the imagination when she donned this see-through floor length J Mendel gown. There doesn't appear to be a baby bump in sight but then again we haven't stopped looking at her boobs.
10. Naya Rivera Is A Kim Kardashian Prototype
Big Seans' fiance Naya Rivera shut down the red carpet in this plunging gown but we wish she would have kept her mouth closed because she sounds just like Kim Kardashian. If you follow the "Glee" star on Instagram, you'd know she and Kimmy Kakes are friends. That Kardashian whiny voice is enough to drive you insane. Big Sean and Kanye West make music together, they must go to the same therapist as well.
11. Ride With Nelly
Nelly took us on a trip down memory lane when he performed his song "Ride With Me." When we weren't staring at his gorgeous arms peeking through that tight shirt, we sang along and twerked a little. But, when is anyone going to tell Nelly we're not here for his country career. Watch the performance here: http://bit.ly/IczZZR
