Howard University‘s annual Yardfest turned into a dangerous event on Friday.
According to reports, chaos broke out at the homecoming concert after a crowd tried to rush the entrance gate, delaying the concert for more than an hour and injuring at least eight people.
“For at least two decades, Yardfest was free and open to the public, making it one of the hallmark events of Howard’s homecoming weekend. But this year, organizers made the concert a ticketed event, charging $5 for each patron,” the Washington Post reports. A spokesperson for Howard said “most of the people left outside the closed gates did not have tickets, though it was possible some ticketed patrons got caught in the raucous group.”
Among the injured were two MPD officers working to calm the crowd. All of the victims were taken to hospital, where one civilian was treated for a broken leg. The other injuries were reported as minor.
Scheduled performances for this year’s Yardfest included Big Sean, 2Chainz, Juicy J, A$AP Ferg and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
