Fresh off the heels of another season of Fashion Week — from New York to London, Milan and Paris — here is a mix of five mainstream, foreign and documentary films to tide over all you fashionistas until the next round of runway shows. Grab some snacks, a stack of style mags and hole up with your girlfriends for the weekend!
The Devil Wears Prada
This ’06 Comedy-Drama starring the regal Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway is a must watch for fashionistas (and in my opinion for all interns!) Set in NYC, DWP chronicles the pitfalls and eventual successes of Andrea, a college graduate who finds a job as an assistant to a powerful fashion magazine editor. She must learn to be ruthless and strategic, but at what cost?
Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel
Before there was Anna Wintour, there was Diana Vreeland. This 2011 documentary gives a look at the life and work of the celebrated and influential former editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue Magazine.
The September Issue
Named after Vogue’s biggest issue of the year, a fashionistas’ bible if you will, this 2009 film follows Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her team as they create and prepare to launch the magazine’s 2007 September issue. One of the things I love most about this docu is the great commentary and insight from some of the fashion industry’s most influential minds.
Sex and The City
It’s hard to talk fashion movie’s and not mention one of the biggest fashion franchises in TV and Film: “Sex & The City!” C’mon, who didn’t want to dress as fiercely as Carrie Bradshaw?! With the help of the series’ costume designer Patricia Field, the 2008 movie version of the beloved HBO show brought a huge dose of style to the big screen with each character decked out from head to toe. The storyline is awesome, but what will really have you on the edge of your seat is the outfits.
CoCo before Chanel
This 2009 French language film tells the story of CoCo Chanel’s rise from orphan to icon, with her love affairs sprinkled in between. Once a barmaid and singer (the name “CoCo” stems from a song she would perform nightly with her sister) Chanel went on to create a fashion sensibility the world had never seen on women. The movie sees her take her innovative designs straight to the top!
