Former heavyweight champion Ken Norton, the man responsible for breaking Muhammad Ali’s jaw in a 1973 fight, has died.

The Associated Press reports Norton passed away Wednesday at a Veterans Affairs’ medical facility in Las Vegas. According to his son, he suffered several strokes over the years and had been in failing health.

The boxer is best known for his series of fights with famed heavyweight Muhammad Ali. Norton won their first showdown in 1973, however Ali got his revenge six months later and in their third 1976 fight.

He retired from boxing in 1981 with a professional record of 42 wins, 33 knockouts, seven losses and one draw.

Norton was 70 at the time of his death.
