Los Angeles-born rappers Snoop Lion and The Game have agreed to pay for the funeral costs of a 6-year-old girl who was shot and killed outside her family’s home earlier this week.
According to reports, Tiana Ricks was gunned down in Moreno Vallery, Calif. after two men approached her and her father, 26-year-old Tyrell Ricks Jr., in thier driveway and opened fire. The 2nd grader was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Snoop Lion, formerly known as Snoop Dogg, donated an undisclosed amount to the Ricks family, his representatives confirmed. He described the tragedy as “heartbreaking.”
“Little 6-year-old girls are not supposed to die from a gunshot. But it keeps happening,” Snoop told the LA Times. “From the mass shootings in Aurora and Newtown, to gang violence in the streets and murders in our own backyards, too many tears are being shed, too many young lives are being cut short. We need to come together to change this.”
“Beautiful Tiana loved to play the piano,” he added. “She had a whole life ahead of her which she should have been filled with love and music.”
The Game also pledged $10,000 for Tiana’s funeral. “This very sad story hit me in a place nothing ever has,” he tweeted. “Tiana did not know she was shot & kept asking was her father okay.”
The young girl’s mother Marquia Macklin told TMZ she is grateful for The Game’s donation.
“Game told me that he heard about my story and was really sorry. He said that he wanted to help out and put me in touch with his financial team,” she said. “It costs so much to bury her … sadly $10,000 only covers half of the casket and the plot.”
The Game’s good deed follows the mission of his new The Robin Hood Project, where he’s agreed to give away $1,000,000 of his own money to people in need.
Our hearts go out to Tiana’s family and all those involved. Her funeral is scheduled to be held today. Police are still in search for the suspects.
