It’s been a over a month since George Zimmerman was acquitted for the murder of Trayvon Martin, but the fight for justice and law reform has not stopped.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence released a 90-second PSA today, titled “Stand Up To ‘Stand Your Ground'” with a dramatic reenactment of the rainy night the 17-year-old lost his life. The group used actually 911 calls from the case and actors to play Zimmerman and Martin.
In the clip, dozens of young Black men in hoodies are shown lying on the ground after the sound of a gunshot, along with the names of at least 20 state where ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws are in effect.
“‘Stand Your Ground’ laws have essentially legalized murder. With this PSA, we hope to add to the nationwide push to repeal these immoral laws,” said Ladd Everitt, a spokesperson for the nonprofit.
“‘Stand Your Ground’ laws remove the duty to retreat from a conflict in public, allowing individuals to shoot and kill even when they could otherwise walk away safely from an altercation,” reads a statement on to the CSGV’s website. “Now you can provoke a fight, and if losing that fight, kill the person you attacked.”
The PSA video ends with a special message: Our laws should protect victims. Not create more.
