“OUCH!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, just about each and every time my mom decided to plop me down in the kitchen to straighten out my unruly and tightly-wound curls. No matter how “careful” she claimed to be, my momma would nick my ear with that burning-hot comb, rub it and say, “Momma’s sorry!” before unintentionally doing it again. I’m surprised you can’t still see the marks now!

Must Read: 3 Foolproof Ways To Find A Shade That Works

After reminiscing on those burning-good times, I called my momma to tell her why she should have never opted to do my hair in the “comforts” of her kitchen. Allow me to share these reasons with you.

The Dreaded Ear Burn

Any time I could feel the breath of that hot comb on my neck, I flinched. My mom would tug on my curls and snap, “Keep still!” It was kind of hard to stay still when you know she’s going to slip and nick your ear with that burning-hot comb.

Getting Popped With The Comb/Grease

If it wasn’t the grease that my mom so conveniently chose to use before she hit my hair with the hot comb, it was the regular comb–either way, I wouldn’t leave a kitchen salon setting without a good old fashioned pop.

The Hairstyle Never Lasts

No matter how tight my momma would pull my kinky hair, 30 minutes to an hour after celebrating my freedom from her dreaded kitchen, my kitchen was all out of place!

She’s Not A Professional

God bless my sweet momma, but the way she would slather grease on her strong hands and start from my lips and work her way up to my hair–man, listen…the struggle was real! No hair dresser does that! And when I would complain, I’d gain myself one of those patented comb pops!

Neck Pains

From climbing onto the kitchen counter and laying down, stretching my neck to the sink to being tugged and pulled while my hair was being blow dried–there was nothing I could do to make my neck feel comfortable during my “hair appointment.”

Do you remember getting your hair done in your mom’s kitchen? What are some of your worst memories?
