Beyonce and Jay Z made an appearance at a “Justice for Trayvon Martin” rally in New York City this weekend, alongside civil rights activist Al Sharpton, Sybrina Fulton and many other community leaders to protest Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws.
The power couple refused to talk to reporters, but Jay Z did tell Sharpton the reason for their visit. “I’m a father and Beyonce is a mother,” he said.

The “PoliticsNation” host told the crowd, which numbered into the several hundreds, that “two of the baddest artists of all time” were in attendance.
“Jay Z and Beyonce said they didn’t want to speak and they didn’t come for a photo op,” Sharpton said. “Beyonce put a beautiful message up on Instagram. Let me tell you, that before a lot of you were down, Jay Z always supported us.”
“Jay Z told me, ‘I’m a father. Beyonce is a mother.’ We all feel the pain and apprehension — the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn’t protect anybody,” he added. “We do not come from hate, we come from love of children.”
After Zimmerman’s not-guilty verdict was announced last week, Beyonce asked to “have a moment of silence for Trayvon” at her Mrs. Carter World Tour stop in Nashville. She’s also publicly supported efforts to have civil rights charges filed against Martin’s murder, George Zimmerman. “We must fight for Trayvon the same way the generation before us fought for Emmett Till,” she wrote on her website.
Beyonce’s equally famous husband has shown his support on concert stages as well. Jay dedicated his song “Forever Young” to the slain 17-year-old at his Legends of the Summer”concert Friday night.
“Everybody put a cell phone and light it up,” he said. “Let’s light the sky for Trayvon Martin tonight in here.”
