Sybrina Fulton, the mother of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin, took the witness stand today and testified that person who was screaming in the background of a 911 call was her son.
“Ma’am that scream or yell, do you recognize that?” prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda asked.
“Yes,” she replied. “Trayvon Benjamin Martin.”
“I simply listened to the tape,” she added, and “I heard my son screaming.”
The 911 call in question is a key piece of evidence in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial. If the jury can determine the source of the screams then it will provide clues as to who was the aggressor on the night Martin was shot and killed.
Fulton went on to say that she doesn’t believe her son was responsible for his own death and she only had to listen to the tape once to recognize the screams.
Before speaking to the courtroom, the mother of two posted a message on Twitter: “I pray that God gives me the strength to properly represent my Angel Trayvon.”
Trayvon’s older brother Jahvaris also took the stand and testified that the high-pitched wails where made by his brother.
“Listening to the 911 call was clouded by shock, sadness and denial,” the 22-year-old said. “I didn’t want to believe it was Trayvon.”
Associate Medical Examiner Shiping Bao estimated that 17-year-old Martin lived for 10 minutes after her was shot in the heart.
“There was no chance he could survive,” he said. “My opinion is he was still alive, still in pain, still in suffering. The bullet went straight, directly from the front to the back. His heart beat until there was no blood left.”
