Dave Chappelle has always been vocal about the entertainment industry’s attempt to stifle the manhood of the Black male comedians by requiring they don dresses for comedic relief. In fact, during a sit down with Oprah in 2006, he shared a personal story about running into this same request in Hollywood and standing up for himself. He ended up not wearing the dress, but soon after, Chappelle made an infamous pilgrimage to Africa to take a break from everything industry.
Kevin Hart–one of the other mainstream funnymen who hit the scene after Chappelle’s not-so-graceful exit also claimed that he knows where his boundaries are and would never lose sight of that. I guess wearing a dress wasn’t anywhere near his boundaries because he chose to wear one during his debut on “Saturday Night Live.“

We ran into Kevin Hart on the red carpet of his NYC premiere of “Let Me Explain,” and he broke it down for us. Wearing a dress was progression for him. Check out what he had to say about challenging his own boundaries.
I thought it was funny. No one made me do anything. I never do anything that I don’t want to do. It was funny. It was current and the girl Quvenzhane was funny. People who feed into the Black man getting emasculated by wearing dresses are stuck in a world where you’re never going to evolve. No matter what, people grow. If you chose not to grow, you’re staying in a small box with a small mindset. People who win, go outside of that box. It’s very simple when you look at it.
Simple. What an interesting choice of words. Progression is anything but simple. Ask Dave Chappelle. It took him eight years to come back to comedy–a world that seemed to make him extremely uncomfortable. There’s nothing simple about that.
Chappelle recently announced his official high-profile return to the game after walking away from “The Chappelle Show” in 2005. Kevin Hart came up under the ranks of Chappelle and had nothing but positive things to say about his fellow funnyman when we spoke to him on the red carpet of the New York premiere of “Let Me Explain.”
“I’m a fan,” he revealed. “I’ll be someone who attends the show.”
