“Chicago is where it all began for me,” Chaka said. “Even before Rufus, I sang with local groups such as The Babysitters, Lock and Chain and Lyfe. As a young girl, growing up on Carpenter Street, my parents introduced me to a very rich musical foundation—starting with jazz and opera. I owe this city so much, and I’m deeply honored by this tribute.”

She added, “Chicago will always be a part of me, and with this street naming, I now will always be a part of it. It’s a blessing to me and my family. We are profoundly grateful to all the people of Chicago.”

After the “Queen of Funk-Soul” accepts her honor, she is schedule to perform at a free outdoor concert in Millennium Park.
