Check out three media mavens making moves in radio!
Angela Yee’s work mantra is classic.
“Just because I’m having fun doesn’t mean I’m not working,” she says, which couldn’t be more appropriate. The New York City radio it girl is most known as a morning show host on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club and most recently, a cast member on Vh1’s The Gossip Game. Her envy-inducing career seems like it’s all glitz and glamour but she didn’t get where she is by slacking off. Angela’s key to balancing a multi-media career is understanding her boundaries.
“Don’t over commit. When I think too hard about my day it feels overwhelming, so I stay positive and knock each task off the list instead of sitting around procrastinating,” she told Hello Beautiful. “I also had a problem saying no, but now that I have early mornings, packed days, and late nights I have to prioritize.”
So far, this seems to be working out well. Next up for Yee includes working on her talk show, hopefully coming to a TV near you soon.
Devon Anjelica Brown aka “Devi Dev” was a self-described latchkey kid, who turned to radio as a child for an outlet for companionship. She knew since day one that she had discovered her first love.
“It amazed me as a young girl that people were able to make you smile, laugh and even cry having never met them and unable to see them,” says Dev, who used to go to sleep at night clutching her boom box listening to the after hours hip hop shows in her native, L.A. “I grew up listening to greats like Big Boy, Julio G and Theo. Cracking up with laughter on the way to school as Big Boy did his prank phone taps or crying as I listened to Theo break the news that Tupac was dead and pleading with people not to get violent in the streets of L.A. Moments like that stuck with me and made me want to impact people that way as well.”
Dev’s career as on-air talent began in college, where she interviewed the likes of Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, John Legend and more. Eventually she ended up at Radio One’s 97.9 The Box (KBXX) in Houston, Sirius XM’s Sway In The Morning, and also landed on TV as the host of MTV’s Hip-Hop POV, which is perfect considering that Dev plans to expand her TV resume.
“I’m obsessed with food and travel. So in addition to working on TV and Radio projects I’m doing some foundation building now to move into the world of foodie’s and wander-luster’s,” she says. “Using what I’ve already built in my career as tools for the other things I’m interested in.”
One of those projects includes launching a website and app called “Foodie After Dark,” but in the meantime, catch her on the radio on Houston’s 97.9 The Box or say hello on Twitter.
Beyonce must have had Egypt Sherrod in mind when she created her song, “Diva.” The host of HGTV’s Property Virgins, V-103 Atlanta Radio Personality, wife and mother is definitely a hustler and she’s not done racking up slashes. Sherrod eventually plans to add best selling author, world-renowned inspirational speaker, Emmy award –winner and possibly even astronaut to her bucket list. Sherrod says the latter in jest but with so many accomplishments under her belt and the continued expansion of her multi-media brand, it might not be impossible.
“I’d like to think my biggest highlight is still to come,” says Sherrod, who has had the opportunities to interview legends like Oprah Winfrey, who complemented her on her interviewing skills, and Prince, who invited her to sing onstage with him at Madison Square Garden. “Everyday presents new challenges, and I try to cope with each gracefully, one by one. Finding more balance is something I work at daily.”
In other words, humility, style and grace are just as important as success and it’s also important to be prepared. Her advice to aspiring media mavens out there: “Don’t look at it as a hobby. Look at it as a real bonafide business. The way we approach our business sets us up for either success of failure.”
