Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith is paying tribute to his now-deceased groupmate of nearly 20 years, Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly.

As the surviving member of ’90s rap duo Kris Kross, Smith decided to express his grief in a statement to E! Online.

“Chris Kelly was my Best Friend,” he said. “He was like a brother. I love him and will miss him dearly.”

He went on to say that their friendship was much deeper than their music career.

“Our friendship began as little boys in first grade. We grew up together. It was a blessing to achieve the success, travel the world and entertain Kris Kross fans all around the world with my best friend,” he continued. “It is what we wanted to do and what brought us happiness. I will always cherish the memories of the C-Connection.”

He concluded is statement by giving one last shoutout to is rap partner: “KRIS KROSS FOREVER, the ‘MAC DADDY’ and ‘DADDY MAC.'”

Kelly passed away of a suspected drug overdose on May 1st. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, May 9th in his hometown of Atlanta, Ga.
