Morehouse may be facing some bad press because of the allegations of rape that are surfacing around a few of the universities athletes, but this month should be one of the happiest months in the lives of Morehouse seniors. While many of them are gearing up for graduation, the black cloud of college rape hangs low over them. However, these allegations haven’t stopped President Obama from keeping his obligation for speaking at the commencement ceremony.

In just two short weeks, President Obama will be the first sitting president to deliver an address at the college. I’m glad that the entire school wasn’t punishes for the actions of a few irresponsible athletes. Many critics want Obama to cancel and I’m sure others are hoping he sheds some light on the topic of college campus rapes, but graduation is a celebration. And the students who studied hard to make it through four strenuous years of school deserve that celebration.
Brandon Banks, president of the Atlanta Morehouse Alumni Association had this to say about Morehouse’s drama:
“I don’t think isolated events can put a black cloud over the great things that are happening at Morehouse college. We’re not perfect, but we understand that there are situations that need to be addressed. Sometimes, these opportunities are created so that we can have proactive conversations and strengthen our students and our alumni.”
Let’s hope these conversations happen because something needs to be done because rape is way too casual on college campuses. What do you think about President Obama still giving the commencement speech at Morehouse?
