K. Michelle’s music doesn’t offer the most prolific lyrics, but one thing you can say about it, is that it’s real. The Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” star released a video for her tune, “I Just Wanna,” and in the song, she tries to combat the “slut shaming” that’s all too apparent when women who are comfortable with their sexuality decide they want sex without strings attached.

With lyrics like these, it’s tough to decide which side of the fence I am on n this argument:

I just want you to drop your pants to the floor

Cause I’m a little scared of commitment, but tonight I’m committed to your body

Cause I just wanna f-ck and not fall in love

I’m over all the pain that love can bring, tonight I want sex that doesn’t mean a thing

That don’t make me no slut, a woman has her needs

So don’t you go catching feelings for me

Tonight I want sex that doesn’t mean a thing

I love that she can be so open with her sexuality and unapologetic about wanting to satisfy her loins. Men do it all the time and they’re never subjected to this type of labeling. In fact, men with many conquests are often celebrated. This sick gender gap is filled with rappers like Rick Ross, who confidently spew lyrics alluding to rape without fearing any backlash or consequence. There’s a reason Ross let these questionable lyrics fly and it’s because our society often shrugs off misogyny and latches on to women who claim power over their own sexuality like leeches.

However, I don’t think a ballad is the proper place or time to proclaim how much you like sex without any commitment. Couldn’t she just send a text? I’m not sure if K. Michelle wants us to take this song seriously, but I know that she’s got a brand new record deal with Warner Brothers, so now would be the time for her to release the music she believes in. At least she stands for something.

What do you think about K. Michelle’s new song? Can a woman truly f*ck and not fall in love without being labeled a slut? Sound off in the comments below.
