Police Sgt. Ron King of Port Canaveral, Florida recently decided to use a Trayvon Martin-inspired photo in a target practice session. These careless actions cost Sgt. King his job and now he’s speaking out against his termination. In a video posted by King, he told his side of the story.

“I would like to start my statement by first apologizing to the family of Trayvon Martin for being used as a pawn in somebody’s political agenda.
As a result of last year’s Trayvon Martin shooting, a company offered for sale a target of a faceless silhouette wearing a hoodie with his hands in his pockets, one of which was holding two objects, these objects in the hand were non-threatening and the target was something that I viewed as a no-shoot situation.
While others used it as a novelty, I view it as a tool for scenario based firearms training. Although to date, the targets have never been used, I did possess the targets for those training reasons.”

While I do believe insensitive actions like this, especially since this happened in Florida (the same state unarmed teen Trayvon Martin was gunned down in by George Zimmerman), I believe Sgt. King. I don’t think he purchased the target with bad or a sarcastic intention.
I believe that he truly wanted to use this controversial image to make a point to his students and show that not every person in a hoodie is a threat and needs to be shot down.
However, I’d like to speak with the manufacturer of the target because to include the Skittles and Arizona canned tea is just irresponsible. I get it. There will be civilians, in hoodies, pulling candy out of their pockets, instead of a handgun, and these people do no deserve to die. However, I believe it’s tasteless to have the can and candy in the target as well.
