When 100 women gather for an intimate conversation about entertainment and media, there is guaranteed to be a laundry list of takeaways. This Wednesday, #TeamBeautiful kicked off our first #SheTalks event with TV Producer and music maven Mona Scott-Young. Needles to say, we learned a lot! With Mist Harlem as the beautiful backdrop, Mona Scott-Young sat down with #TeamBeautiful’s Leigh Davenport, Editorial Director, to address her involvement with legendary company Violator Management and controversial reality show “Love & Hip Hop.”

Before Mona ventured into television, she had a long career in music management at iconic firm Violator. She worked with everyone from Diddy to 50 Cent. And, built the company with Chris Lighty. The good, the bad, the ugly–Mona has seen it all! “50, he likes to mind fuck you. 50 was incredibly astute. He was more work. You always had to be on your toes,” she revealed.

“I put a camera on a segment of our population. These women exist. I don’t make them up,” Mona  explained. Her company Monami produces the hit show that features characters Joseline Hernandez, Stevie J and K. Michelle. The show is constantly under scrutiny for its display of violence and unconventional relationships. The weight of the black television plight has been unfairly placed on Mona’s shoulders, but she wears it with confidence. “No matter how much they come for me, I’m willing to sand behind my work 100%.”

Mona can attribute a lot of her “Love & Hip Hop success to one specific woman–Joseline Hernandez baby! Mona calls her “a gift from reality Gods.”
