Ford Motor Company’s ad for the Ford Figo (a hatchback made in India) featured three women in the trunk, scantily clad and bound and gagged. Sex sells, but this gross representation of women being dominated in a way that reads like kidnapping and rape is just sick. The powers that be in India should have rethought this ad because of it’s sickening imagery. These ads are not only bad taste, but the timing is just horrible. The new anti-rape legislation has just been passed by the Indian Parliament and it’s obvious India needs it. Remember the gang rape of the 23-year-old who was on a date? Here’s Ford’ apology by way of a statement sent to Huffington Post from advertising agency WPP:

“We deeply regret the publishing of posters that were distasteful and contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within WPP Group,” the statement said. “These were never intended for paid publication and should never have been created, let alone uploaded to the internet. This was the result of individuals acting without proper oversight and appropriate actions have been taken within the agency where they work to deal with the situation.”

And here’s what Ford stole from their advertiser’s apology and paraphrased for their own apology:

“We deeply regret this incident and agree with our agency partners that it should have never happened. The posters are contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford and our agency partners.”
