Gun Appreciation Day falls on January 19th and despite the growth of gun violence in the United States, there’s groups dedicated to being ecstatic about the day of appreciation.

In fact, Gun Appreciation Day was developed after the disapproval of guns in the hands of civilians since the infamous attack at Sandy Hook Elementary. The chairman of Gun Appreciation Day, Larry Ward appeared on CNN, defending the day of appreciation by saying”
“I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history.”
I can’t lie, I was ready to be outraged, but upon listening to Ward, I’d say he’s got a point. Had slaves been given the right to bare arms, slavery would have gone a lot different. There would have been a lot more wars than whips.

The thing I like least is that Ward not thinks he’s right in creating a day to appreciate guns and he says that Dr. Martin Luther King–a man who was centered around non-violence would agree with his one-sided views on guns. Maybe he thinks they relate because like Dr. King, Ward wants a “peaceful protest.”
There’s one man we can count on who wouldn’t take this lying down and that’s Reverend Al Sharpton. On his show this week, Sharpton went in on Ward’s Dr. King references, educating him on Dr. King’s death by the gun and told him he was the “antithesis of Dr. King.” Check out the video below.
