It was a Friday night in Detroit. (I know, just keep reading)

Me and the homie decided to take in a bit of the nightlife in ‘the D’. (I KNOW! Just stay with me on this one)

So, there I was.  Standing in the middle of a packed “club” (in my head I just used 2-finger air quotes) wearing a simple ensemble: leggings, tall boots, a fitted top, and some fun accessories.  I thought I wore my outfit well, but it was no competition for the attire surrounding me. Everywhere, in every color and in every size were women in what I like to call ‘don’t bend over’ dresses.  Dresses so short that if she bends over…. yep, you know.

Intrigued by this I declared to my boy, J, that while a dress like that is cute it would not be my fashion pick for a night out on the town.  Here’s how the rest of that conversation went:

Him: Why?

Me: I mean, I’ve worn my fair share of dresses like that over the years – mostly in my 20’s. But now, as a woman in my mid 30’s, I want to wear not only what looks good on me but what’s also comfortable and age appropriate. Feel me?

Him: *blank stare*

Me: What?

Him: You’re trippin’.

Me: How am I trippin’?

Him: What would Stacey Dash do?

Me: *blink*

For those who need a quick primer on Stacey Dash, she’s best known for her role as Alicia Silverstone’s BFF, Dionne, in the 1995 teen classic, Clueless.  But this is not about her thespian achievements.  This is about what she looked like two years ago at age 44:

Stacey Dash, at age 46, slays the game. This is not up for discussion or debate. Just nod your head in agreement.

So, there I was.  Standing in the middle of a packed “club” (air quotes) wearing a simple ensemble: leggings, tall boots, a fitted top, and some fun accessories.  I thought I wore my outfit well, but please believe I will think twice before I wear it again especially for a night out!  And you should too!

So ladies, say it with me: What would Stacey Dash do?

…When you’re getting dolled up for the night and can’t decide between the jeans and the low cut dress, just think: What would Stacey Dash do?

…When you’re at dinner gazing at the menu trying to decide between the burger and the salad, what would Stacey Dash do?

…When you’re just running up the block to meet a girlfriend for coffee and about to reach for the flats… yes ma’am, what would Stacey Dash do?

…When it’s 40 degrees and pouring rain outside and you’re contemplating spending time on your couch or at the gym… Stacey.

Say what you want about Stacey Dash (and to be clear, I’m only focusing on her looks  here), you cannot deny that she’s stunning.  So all I’m saying is give yourself permission to be stunning at any age and in any and everything that you do.  Whatever that means to you.

For me, it means no more leggings and boots at the club – even in Detroit (!)
