It’s no surprise that as parents we like to enroll our children in as many activities as we can because we want them to be well rounded individuals. However, it just might be possible to over schedule our children.

An article from Psychology Today speaks on the issue of over scheduling. “Alvin Rosenfeld, M.D., a child psychiatrist and author of The Over-Scheduled Child: Avoiding the Hyper-Parenting Trap, believes that enrolling children in too many activities is a nationwide problem.
“Overscheduling our children is not only a widespread phenomenon, it’s how we parent today,” he says. “Parents feel remiss that they’re not being good parents if their kids aren’t in all kinds of activities. Children are under pressure to achieve, to be competitive. I know sixth-graders who are already working on their resume’s so they’ll have an edge when they apply for college.” – Psychology Today
I think there is some truth here as we do live in a society that is very competitive but also think that as parents I think we know what our children can and cannot handle. We know what is best for them. However, I also think it is equally important that we do take notice to how our children feel and react as they take part in these activities. If they seem to be exhausted or not interested in an activity then it’s probably time to evaluate their schedules and make adjusts where necessary. I don’t believe in running children into the ground. It’s important that we also give them free time to explore new and exciting things on their own.
