whitney-houston-sparkleWhitney Houston would have been 49 today, but she was taken from us on February 11, 2012 after a lethal dose of prescription medicines and illegal drugs claimed her life.

MUST READ: HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHITNEY HOUSTON!

Whitney lived a full life and will always be remembered for her one-of-a kind voice and contributions to music!

She had just finished filming the movie “Sparkle,” a remake of the 1970′s film where she played the mother of three beautiful daughters, before she passed. People who worked with her last, say she was a glorious woman and “humble.”

Cast-mate Tika Sumpter described her as motherly. She remembers joking with Whitney and the time Whitney scolded her for something negative she said!

“She’s an icon, and was so accessible on set and vulnerable, loving and nurturing. She treated us like we were her own,” said Sumpter, her voice elevated as she recalled working with Houston.

“She was kind of like a momma. One time she thought I said something in particular and she said ‘What, what you say?’ Like protective of me, because she thought I said something, and I remember it clearly, that could possibly harm me and she was like ‘Excuse me?’ Her mother lioness came out and I could see it. She’s just protective. I learned humility from her. For all it’s worth she could have been a diva if she wanted to be and she wasn’t. She was humble. It was almost like just kicking it with mom. It was surreal, like I’m really kicking it right now with Whitney Houston. We’d be laughing and the director would be like ‘Tika, Whitney stop!’”

For hours on that cold February day, we were unsure if the reports about Whitney’s death were true. If Whitney had or hadn’t left this earth. Wherever you were, you will always remember, the melancholy moment when it was announced. Tika was in LA for the Grammy Awards and supposed to meet up with Whitney the very next day.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was like ‘No…no” Tears formed in my eyes and I called Debra Martin Chase, who was her producing partner. She was in New York.. And I go, ‘Debra, it’s not true, right?’ And she goes, ‘What are you talking about?’ And I was like, ‘That Whitney passed?’ And she was like, ‘No.’ ‘No.’ All she kept saying was ‘no.’ She’s like, ‘I’ll call you back.’ And that was it. So it was definitely a big hit for us. I know exactly where I was, you know. It’s like when Kennedy got assassinated.”

RIP Whitney!
