Adele is 24 years old—a number that may surprise some fans, given the British singer’s soulful delivery. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born May 5, 1988, in North London, England. The “Rolling in the Deep” songstress has referenced age in the titles of both of her studio albums. She released her debut, 19, when she was just 19 years old, and the follow-up, 2011’s 21, was inspired by a breakup she experienced as—you guessed it—a 21-year-old.

At 24 years old, Adele is one of the younger R&B stars on the scene. Older artists include Beyonce (30), Ciara (26), Nicki Minaj (29), and Rihanna, who is also 24 years old but was born February 20, 1988—nearly three months before Adele.

Adele isn’t the first British soul singer to achieve fame at an early age. Amy Winehouse was just 23 years old when she released Back to Black, the album that made her a star. She, of course, died in July 2011 at the age of 27, leaving critics to wonder what she might have accomplished. Questions surrounding Adele’s future tend to center on her singing voice, as she underwent throat surgery in November 2011 after suffering a vocal cord hemorrhage and canceling a string of tour dates.
