19-year-old Deryl Dedmon is a white teenager that was out joyriding on a hot summer’s day in June, searching for a black person to terrorize and he and his friends found James Craig Anderson. According to the Huffington Post, Dedmon admitted that he and a group of white teens were partying in Puckett, a small town outside the capital city, when he suggested they find a black man to harass and went to Jackson because of its majority-black population. They found 47-year-old Anderson before dawn outside a hotel. Anderson was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was beaten before Dedmon ran over him.

Dedmon offered an apology to Anderson’s family as he received his sentence of two life terms in prison. Watch the graphic video of the hit-and-run and Dedmon’s apology below.

The timing on Dedmon being convicted is quite convenient. Just because justice was finally served in this clearly racist case doesn’t mean that we’re going to forget about the justice that is yet to be served in the Trayvon Martin tragedy. Attempt to distract us all you can with other racial convictions, but we’re still standing firm on making sure Trayvon did not die in vain.

What do you think of Dedmon’s conviction? Does it put a band-aid on the Trayvon wound? Let’s discuss on Twitter @Rhapsodani.
