Remember all those crazy hair infomercials from the 90’s? When the Topsy Tail came out, I begged my mom to order me one and she quickly told me that it would never work for my hair and she’d probably have to cut it out. So each and every time that infomercial or any like it would come on, I’d watch sadly, knowing my kinky hair wouldn’t be able to perform the same hair acrobatics. Here’s a list of the top five hair products from the 90’s that would never, ever work on black hair.
1. Hairdini
An updo with no pins? Seriously–this would never happen in real life.
2.Hairigami
Twisting and turning your hair into fun swirly shapes that you can call “Hair Sushi” without coming off racist at all. Yeah, I can see that.
3. Topsy Tail
This little piece of hair magic boasts its ability to work with curly, thick or fine hair. I believe that 100%. That’s probably why they had all those types of hair represented in the infomercial.
4. Magic Twist
The main reason this Magic Twist wouldn’t work for black women? Because we could twist our hair in our sleep. Peep how they have a black girl in this infomercial, not demonstrating, but helping a little white girl with hers.
5. Flowbee
A haircut without the hassle of cleaning up? Brilliant! Except for the fact that you’d never be able to get a vacuum or anything with suction near a black woman’s hair.
