Did you know that 1 in 5 women have been a victim of rape? According to a new survey, about 20% of women are raped at some point in their lifetime and in most cases the attacker is someone the woman knows, so says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Earlier studies have shown that the most likely attacker is a woman’s intimate partner.

The study is the first to examine the prevalence of rape, sexual violence other than rape, stalking and intimate partner violence, and to report the damaging health consequences that last a lifetime. The CDC said 9,086 women and 7,421 men participated in the phone survey.

To help understand these stunning statistics, we need to understand and confront this question: Why do men rape? Many view rape not only as an ugly crime but as a symptom of an unhealthy society, in which men fear and disrespect women. Some say rape is motivated not by lust but by the urge to control and dominate. Others blame the woman for being scantily clad, if she wasn’t wearing that outfit it would not have happened.

The majority of rapes, particularly acquaintance rapes, still go unreported. Most rape victims either blame themselves or believe that society will be quick to blame her as well.
