Supermodel Jourdan Dunn sparked some controversy earlier this week when she tweeted from Paris Fashion Week: “I swear some people need to learn how to do black hair/skin.”

She walked in two runway shows that day- Ungaro and Giambattista Valli – and likely encountered backstage a stylist who didn’t know how to deal with her hair texture and a makeup artist who didn’t know how to compliment her skin tone and shade.

Though this isn’t the first time black models have slammed designers and casting agents for the lack of diversity on the runway, Dunn’s message certainly called out the other folks behind the scenes with her short and to-the-point message.

However, this could be a case of “the chicken and the egg.” Can black models really blame artists & stylists for not knowing how to tend to them if there aren’t that many to work with in the first place? Or is it the stylist’s responsibility to learn somehow, someway, regardless?
