It was after undergoing a cosmetic procedure – a breast reduction – this past February that comedian and actress Wanda Sykes learned that she had DCIS (or ductal carcinoma in situ) – stage O cancer in her left breast, according to People.

Given the history of breast cancer that runs on Wanda’s mother’s side of the family, she made the difficult decision to have a bilateral mastectomy. She said on the Ellen Degeneres Show: “I had both breasts removed…because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer, so I was very lucky.” A dramatic decision yes, but one that was made with her 2-1/2 year old twins and wife Alex in mind.
