What Does 'We Are Just Talking' Say About Your Relationship?

New millennium dating is something special. Our generation has managed to devise a brand new dating strategy that eliminates a strong desire for formal procedures, heart to heart conversation and the need to go above and beyond in any relationship. We no longer need to collect phone numbers or talks for hours on the phone. Don’t you have a smart phone?!Let’s exchange pins?! I haven’t decided whether this is harmful or not as I am knee deep in it, living amongst it every day.

When I have conversations with loved ones of an older generation the issues faced in love and relationships are pretty much the same but I found that things were a lot more black and white in terms of relationship status.

We are just talking is a term used to describe the stage in which two individuals are interested in each other but not yet exclusive or official. It’s a time for exploration and getting to know one another. Lines can become blurred since the talking stage is not one with any real commitment involved. Is this person a friend or a lover?

Is there a difference between talking and dating? Not a whole lot, the only real difference is that the word dating is a tad more formal and puts others at ease when you describe the stage of your love life because it’s easily defined. I find that “just talking” is a more juvenile term associated with highschool corridors and college campuses throughout the country.

I promised myself some time ago that I would stop using “Just talking” to describe what I saw as dating. I found that as I used a more sophisticated vocabulary with my partner and others the whole dynamic of my relationships began to change. The simple use of language encouraged me to inject value and purpose into my love life.

Just talking is cute, like awww he’s carrying my books around campus cute, but there comes a time in a single woman’s life where she is through with playing skip to my lou and pop goes that weasel. She begins to seek value in every interaction with her lovers, as opposed to fun. Most importantly she strives to walk, talk and live with the same level of sophistication and beauty that she wants to attract.

A juvenile perspective attracts juvenile issues.

How do you feel about the term, “we are just talking”?

Is this a term you use in your love life?

In your opinion who has a harder time with the term “just talking” men or women?
