“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

I can remember answering this question at least a half-dozen different ways over the course of my life thus far.  Age can be a daunting notion for women.  Often we see ourselves through where we think we should be by a certain age.   I’m sure many of you (like me) thought you’d be married with kids by age 24.  Then suddenly 24 arrived and you realized you felt far younger than you ever imagined 24 to be in your teen years.  As a twenty-something the age of 30 can loom ominously over your head and you struggle to build a career, figure out your purpose, find true love or simply just grow up.

But there’s also something amazing about youth.   While we can always look to those who’ve already achieved their success for life lessons and wisdom, sometimes looking at our peers (and even those younger than us) can provide an even greater sense of pride and inspiration.  It’s a feeling I was honored to have while working on HelloBeautiful’s first Annual 30 Under 30: Women to Watch list.  The phenomenal young women that we have profiled exemplify the extraordinarily bright future of Black women in this country.

The burden to define generations, set new trends and inspire the future rests on the young.  It lies on the shoulders of talented young musicians like Willow Smith; ambitious minds like Natalie Crawford, Phd; creative visionaries like Tukie B.; and innovative thinkers like Arielle Scott.  It is exemplified by dedicated spirits like Jovian Irvin; fearless leaders like Kelli Coleman and undaunted survivors like Jennnifer Hudson.  HelloBeautiful is honored to profile these amazing women and celebrate their accomplishments.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “youth is wasted on the young.” He clearly never met the ladies on our 30 Under 30 list. As you read about these dynamic women, I hope that you will be inspired by their achievements and their plans.  They are living proof that age is really “ain’t nothing but a number!”
