Whatever you celebrate and however you do it, remember the most important part of the season is not the gifts. No really! The best thing about giving and receiving gifts is that brief, and often unnoticed, exchange that occurs just before the deal is done.

If someone has thrown you a gift under the melee of the Christmas tree, give it back! They were just spending money. However, if they looked you in the eye, were more excited than if they were tearing at the ribbons themselves – THAT is their gift. Their excitement shows their gift was carefully chosen for you, and they have already visualized you enjoying it. That is worth more than what’s tucked inside.

I won’t lie and pretend to recall a relative scripture, but I wonder if I have offended my gift-giver with a less than enthusiastic reception. I wonder, if all the things put into my box, wrapped so carefully for the big reveal, have been set aside because I’m waiting for the ‘Big Daddy, NO YOU DI’UNT!’ Tiffany box. Have I accepted my gifts with, Is this it?

I am a writer, a wife, and a mother, a sister a daughter – that’s it, I believed, setting my box aside hoping for more. Finally, I’ve opened it with an appreciation for each gift that has been lovingly chosen for me. I know now that I am a dreamer, a lover, a teacher, and so much more!

Even though the packaging at times has been a little shady, I know that my gifts were carefully chosen for me and that my giver could not wait for me to open it. It is this act of receiving that has taught me how to give.

Comment and share your most appreciated gifts.
